Dad, the divorce and the Pest side
I cried for days. Then the neighborhood became the coolest in town.
My father is very competitive, so his expectations weren't easy to live up to. He was a serious race walker, ranked 16th in the world in Montreal, and he still holds a couple of Hungarian records from the '80s.
People from Buda are proud of living on the greener, fancier side of the city, and I was no different. When my parents divorced, my mom and I moved to the Pest side, and I cried for days. Then, right when I hit my teens, that same area became the coolest part of town.
My father later remarried a woman a good 30 years younger. To anyone who says an age gap ruins a relationship, I beg to differ: they're still together, with three kids in their twenties. He has now spent far more time with her than with my mom. Good for them.
